At Da Vinci’s Dream Animal Rescue, we believe rescue work extends beyond adoption and transport. Supporting the shelters and communities caring for vulnerable animals is an important part of creating lasting change.
Through our partnership with Kentucky River Regional Animal Shelter (KRRAS) in Hazard, Kentucky, we’ve had the opportunity to work alongside volunteers, supporters, and community members on projects designed to improve shelter conditions and enhance the quality of life for the animals waiting for homes.

By investing in shelter improvements, we can help support both the animals and the dedicated shelter staff working every day to care for them.
One of our recent projects focused on improving the outdoor area surrounding the back building at KRRAS, which is often used to house overflow dogs when the shelter reaches capacity.
Before the project, this area frequently experienced significant standing water, creating muddy and unsanitary conditions for both animals and staff. Stagnant water can increase the risk of bacteria, pests, and disease while making daily cleaning and care much more difficult.
Thanks to the hard work of our volunteers and supporters, we were able to install a new drainage system and pour a concrete pad to help water flow away properly and keep the area cleaner, safer, and more accessible.
This improvement helps provide a healthier environment for the dogs housed in the overflow building while also making daily shelter operations safer and more manageable for staff and volunteers.
Another recent improvement project focused on replacing damaged doors in the shelter’s overflow dog building.
Over time, the original doors had become worn, cracked, and difficult to maintain. Many had broken or missing glass, leaving the rooms darker and more closed off for the dogs staying inside.
Through community donations and volunteer support, Da Vinci’s Dream helped fund and install brand-new doors featuring clear glass panels that allow more natural light into the rooms and give dogs greater visibility to the outside world.
For shelter animals, even small environmental improvements can make a tremendous difference. Increased natural light and visual connection to the outdoors can help reduce stress, improve comfort, and create a more open and welcoming environment while dogs wait for rescue or adoption opportunities.
These improvements also help create safer and more functional spaces for shelter staff caring for the animals each day.
