Every day, social media fills with posts advertising free pets online, including free puppies, free kittens, and animals listed as “free to a good home.”
While most people posting these animals have good intentions, giving away pets for free online can put them in dangerous situations. Unfortunately, free pets online often attract the wrong people because there is little to no screening involved.
At Da Vinci’s Dream Animal Rescue (sometimes searched as DaVinci’s Dream), we strongly encourage safe pet rehoming practices to help protect dogs, cats, and other animals from harm.
Many people do not realize that free pets online sometimes attract dangerous individuals looking for:
Because free pets online usually involve little screening, animals can quickly end up in unsafe situations.
Additionally, many people responding to “free to a good home” posts may sound trustworthy at first. However, kind messages alone do not prove someone will provide proper care.
In illegal dog fighting operations, people sometimes use smaller or defenseless animals as “bait” to train fighting dogs to attack.
Unfortunately, people can easily obtain these animals through free online listings.
Organizations involved in animal cruelty investigations have documented bait animal cases for years. Because of this, many rescues strongly discourage giving animals away for free online.

People searching for reptile feed often target kittens, rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small animals online.
Unfortunately, free kittens online are especially vulnerable because they are easy to obtain without questions, applications, or veterinary checks.
In fact, FOX19 in Kentucky reported that rescuers warned people were responding to free kitten posts under false pretenses and using the animals as snake food instead of pets.
These dangers are very real.
In 2023, an investigation involving the Humane Society of Southern Arizona found that hundreds of small animals transferred to an unaccredited reptile business were likely used as reptile feed.
As a result, the investigation highlighted the importance of proper screening and responsible pet rehoming practices when placing animals into new homes.
Many people believe that if someone sounds nice, they must be trustworthy.
Unfortunately, that is not always true.
For example, someone may say:
However, without proper screening, you still do not know:
Because of this, safe pet rehoming requires more than a friendly message.
Even a small rehoming fee can help protect animals.
For example, a fee can:
✔ Discourage people seeking free animals for harmful reasons
✔ Reduce impulse adoptions
✔ Help attract more prepared adopters
The fee does not need to be expensive. However, even a modest fee changes who responds to the listing.
Additionally, many rescues and humane organizations recommend rehoming fees as part of responsible pet rehoming practices.
At minimum, anyone rehoming a pet should ask for:
Responsible pet owners should not have a problem providing this information.
Meanwhile, people who refuse basic screening may not be the right fit for the animal.
Some people wonder why rescues require:
The answer is simple:
👉 Responsible screening helps keep animals safe.
Rescues do not create these policies to make adoption difficult. Instead, rescues use these steps to place animals safely and responsibly.
At Da Vinci’s Dream Animal Rescue, our process focuses on protecting the long-term well-being of every dog and cat in our care.
If you need to rehome a pet, safer options include:
Although these extra steps may take more time, they dramatically improve the animal’s safety.
Most people giving away pets online are trying to help.
Unfortunately, predators often search specifically for:
Therefore, responsible pet rehoming matters tremendously.
A few extra precautions can mean the difference between:
👉 A safe, loving home
or
👉 A dangerous situation no animal deserves.
If you truly care about an animal’s future:
❌ Do not give them away to the first stranger online
❌ Do not rely only on “good home” promises
Instead:
✔ Ask questions
✔ Verify veterinary references
✔ Charge a small rehoming fee
✔ Consider working with a rescue
Because protecting animals does not stop at finding them a home.
It also means helping ensure it is the right home.
At Da Vinci’s Dream Animal Rescue, we believe education and responsible pet rehoming save lives.
