About Da Vinci's Dream

Da Vinci's Dream is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal rescue based in Kentucky, dedicated to saving and improving the lives of dogs and cats in need through compassionate rescue, foster care, responsible placement, and meaningful community support.

Sometimes searched online as DaVinci’s Dream, our organization rescues animals from high-risk shelters, neglect situations, criminal cases, and off the streets, providing individualized care and helping each animal find a loving permanent home.

We believe every animal deserves safety, compassion, and the opportunity for a better future. Through rescue, foster care, adoption, and outreach, we work to create lasting positive change for animals and the communities around them.

Why "Da Vinci's Dream"?

Our name is inspired by the legendary figure Leonardo da Vinci, who was not only a renowned artist, inventor, and scientist but also an early advocate for animal rights. Leonardo da Vinci's love and compassion for animals are well-documented, and his actions exemplify the values we hold dear in our organization.

One notable story about Da Vinci's commitment to animal welfare is his habit of purchasing caged birds from marketplaces and setting them free. This act of kindness and empathy, which embodies our tagline "Set Them Free," reflects da Vinci's deep respect for the lives and well-being of all creatures, no matter how small.

We draw inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci's dedication to the welfare of animals as we carry out our mission to rescue and protect animals in need. We believe that every animal deserves love, care, and a chance at a better life. Da Vinci's Dream seeks to honor his legacy by continuing his advocacy for animals and working tirelessly to create a world where all animals are valued and protected.

Who We Are

Da Vinci’s Dream is a foster-based rescue, which means our animals live in foster homes rather than in a public shelter facility while they wait for adoption.

This model allows each animal to receive daily care, routine, socialization, and individualized observation in a home environment. Foster care also helps us better understand personality, temperament, and specific needs before placement.

Because our animals live in foster homes, we are able to learn more about daily habits, social behavior, comfort level, and ideal home environment before adoption, helping create stronger long-term matches for both animals and adopters.

Our organization is board-governed and volunteer-run, with every part of our work supported by people committed to animal welfare and thoughtful placement.

Our

Leadership and Governance

As a registered nonprofit organization, Da Vinci’s Dream is not owned by any one individual. The rescue operates under the guidance of a board of directors, with decisions made through a structure designed to support responsible nonprofit management and long-term sustainability.

Current leadership includes board members and volunteers who work together to oversee rescue efforts, foster care, adoption coordination, transport planning, and community outreach.

Da Vinci’s Dream was established through a commitment to improving the lives of vulnerable animals and continues to grow through the dedication of volunteers, foster families, supporters, and community partnerships focused on animal welfare.

Our

Oversight and Structure

Da Vinci’s Dream operates with nonprofit oversight designed to support responsible management, transparency, and long-term sustainability.

Our structure includes:

  • a board of directors
  • professional accounting support through a board-certified accountant
  • legal guidance through retained legal counsel
  • veterinary partnerships that support animal health and rescue operations

As a volunteer-run rescue, our team coordinates foster care, veterinary appointments, application review, transport planning, and community outreach through dedicated volunteer effort.

This structure helps ensure that resources remain focused on animal care, rescue efforts, and successful long-term placements.

Learn

How We Operate

We rescue animals from a variety of situations, including:

  • overcrowded and high-risk shelters
  • stray and abandoned situations
  • neglect cases
  • emergency rescue needs when space allows

Once an animal enters our program, he or she is placed into foster care where we begin learning about daily habits, personality, social behavior, comfort level, and ideal home environment.

Because foster homes are private homes and volunteers coordinate schedules carefully, approved applications are required before meet-and-greets are arranged.

Our goal is always thoughtful placement that supports long-term success for both the animal and adopter.

Why Our Adoption Process Is Structured Carefully

We review applications carefully because every animal has unique needs and every home offers different strengths.

Our process is:

  • not first-come, first-served
  • based on best fit for each specific animal
  • designed to support lasting successful placements

Because application volume can vary, reviews typically take 10–15 days depending on volunteer workload and the number of active applications being considered.

Submitting an application does not place a hold on an animal and does not guarantee approval, but it also does not obligate an adopter to proceed.

Understand

Why Some Dogs Are Listed Outside Kentucky

Although Da Vinci’s Dream is based in Kentucky, some animals are listed in additional states to help increase visibility and connect with more potential adopters.

Animals remain in foster care in Kentucky until adoption is finalized.

For approved out-of-state adopters:

  • health certificates are required by law before crossing state lines
  • transport is coordinated through scheduled transport routes
  • designated meeting locations are used for approved transport destinations

This allows us to help more animals safely reach qualified homes while remaining compliant with interstate adoption requirements.

Our

Community Impact

Da Vinci’s Dream believes rescue work extends beyond adoption alone.

Recent efforts include:

  • over 300 dogs placed into loving homes in 2025
  • more than 150 insulated shelters built and donated for outdoor cats
  • thousands of pounds of food donated to local shelters
  • direct support for shelter improvement projects in Kentucky
  • transport support to help animals reach safety and placement opportunities

We also partner with shelters and community efforts to improve animal welfare in practical and lasting ways.
